Pattern of Neurological Disorders among Children Presenting at the Neurology Unit of Tertiary Hospital in Awka

Background: Many children in Nigeria suffer from detrimental, debilitating and lifelong neurologic disorders, many of which are highly preventable using simple, cost-effective interventions. Objective: To examine the pattern neurological disorders among presenting at neurology unit Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Amaku, Awka, Nigeria. Methods: A retrospective review hospital records who presented Paediatric Neurology Unit between 1st March 2020 31st 2022 was carried out. Data were abstracted a proforma analyzed SPSS Version 21. Results: total 138 aged 0 to 15 years seen during period under review. 115 (83.35%) these diagnosed with chronic disorders. Those had male:female ratio 1.9:1, majority (65%) them below 5 age. The most common complaints delayed milestones (43.4%), seizures (23.8%), speech (17.2%). typical diagnosis cerebral palsy (CP) (34.7%), seizure disorder (29.8%) attention deficit hyperactivity (8.9%). Perinatal asphyxia (47.7%), neonatal jaundice (17.0%) central nervous system infections (CNS) (12.5%) identified as major risk factors responsible for Conclusion: Cerebral constitute our institution. Efforts should be intensified reducing incidence impact perinatal asphyxia, CNS infections, culprits, curb menace sequelae.
